Keong Kee Bakuteh

Tucked into a shop lot in the car-dealer-heavy Glenmarie area, this bak kut teh spot draws a crowd of local workers at lunchtime.

There's something posted on the wall — but it's not the menu.

Look closely and you'll find real estate listings on the wall, not a bak kut teh menu. I arrived just before noon to an empty shop, but by the time I finished eating, most seats were full. The place is popular with Japanese visitors too — the female owner even gave dish explanations in basic Japanese.

Both dry and soup styles are great.

The dry style has a pleasant spicy kick.

Add soy sauce to the soup bak kut teh.

The soup arrives bubbling hot. The broth is on the mild side, but a splash of the table soy sauce deepens the flavor considerably — it carries a faint dashi-like sweetness that really elevates the bowl. Highly recommended. Two people can eat for around RM 50, which is great value. Alcohol isn't served, but you can probably bring your own.
